Gynaecomastia
What is gynaecomastia?
Gynaecomastia is a medical condition in which men develop enlarged breasts. This can occur at any age and may be caused by hormonal imbalances, obesity or genetics. In some instances, certain medications or drugs can lead to gynaecomastia.
One or both breasts may be affected by gynecomastia, which can occur unevenly. Although gynecomastia rarely causes medical complications, the condition can be a source of emotional distress for those affected.
Causes of gynaecomastia
There are various reasons gynaecomastia can occur, and these reasons can include:
- Hormonal imbalance
- Klinefelter syndrome
- Obesity
- Medication side effects
How is gynaecomastia treated?
In most men, gynecomastia goes away on its own without any intervention. If the condition is brought on by something else, it might be necessary to treat the underlying cause. You may need to discontinue the use of the drug or try a different medication if you notice that it is causing breast enlargement. If medical options fail, Dr Roodt may suggest breast reduction surgery. Excess breast fat, tissue, and skin are surgically removed during breast reduction surgery. Possible surgical procedures include:
- Liposuction - The doctor will make a few incisions in your breast and insert a thin tube connected to a vacuum to remove excess fat and fluid. This method is preferable for minor weight loss and for people whose skin can easily be reshaped. The glandular tissue of the breasts is left intact during this procedure.
- Mastectomy - Surgery in which a breast is surgically removed is called a mastectomy. In this procedure, the glandular tissue of the breasts is surgically removed. Typically, only tiny incisions will be made during the procedure. Recovery time is shorter for this surgery method because it causes less tissue damage.
